An alarm has been raised at a zoo in France, when a pack of nine wolves managed to escape while the park was open and welcoming visitors.

The incident took place last weekend at the Trois Vallées zoo in Montredon-Labessonnié, and fortunately no one was injured.

Four wolves were shot dead by zoo employees, while the other five were anesthetized, according to official Fabien Chollet, who spoke to the French news agency.

The zoo was closed until the issue, with the safety problem that arose, could be fixed.

The park's owner, Sauveur Ferrara, said the wolves were a recent addition and that the animals got away after they themselves managed to destroy security structures, ertnews.gr reported, citing the Daily Mail. According to him, however, none of the wolves managed to get out of the boundaries of the zoo.

"Due to the unnatural and dangerous behaviour of some of them, four wolves were unfortunately killed by park staff," he further said, claiming that officials immediately evacuated the park from the public.

It may be noted that in October 2020, the zoo was ordered to close due to inadequate security measures however the order was eventually suspended following a court order.

Now, an announcement has been posted on the park's social media "promising" that the zoo will reopen, but this will happen in the new year.
