Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said that he could discuss the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the principle of "sovereign equality", according to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Vatan. Tatar, in a meeting with US Ambassador to Nicosia Judith G. Garber and Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Erika Olson, the T/C leader referred to the historical background of the Cyprus problem and the principle of "sovereign equality" as interpreted by the T/C side. Tatar also reiterated the well-known criticism of the T/C side towards the EU.[/P]In the context of the above, Tatar claimed that "a viable and realistic, solution could only be possible with the cooperation of the two existing states and on the basis of sovereign equality". According to him, this "solution" is accompanied by advantages for the Greek side.
In the meeting between Mr Tatar and the two US officials, the work of the bi-communal technical committees and issues that could facilitate the daily life of the two communities were also discussed.
Ertuğlu on the MoU
The Cyprus issue was also mentioned in separate statements by "Foreign Minister" Tahsin Ertuğlu, who according to Vatan, claimed that the purpose of the Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) proposed by the Greek Cypriot side is on the one hand to divert attention from the essence of the problem and on the other hand to ensure the continuation of the status quo.
In a written statement, Ertougrouloglu described the new MoU proposals as "a futile attempt" and claimed that both the enclosed Varosha and the "airport" and "port" of Famagusta are part of the occupied territories.
"The essence of the Cyprus issue is the status quo," claimed the "suplex", who disagreed with the new proposed MoU.
