Turkish Cypriot journalist and president of the Turkish Cypriot Press Guild, Ali Kishmir, who was recently deported from Turkey, is facing the risk of years of "imprisonment" in the occupied territories. A "trial" has begun in the occupied territories on the basis of an opinion article by Mr Kishmir, which was published at the time of the election of the new leader of the TCs.
At the beginning of the "trial" hearing, Mr Kishmir is also facing the risk of being "banned from leaving" the occupied territories.
According to reports from the occupied territories, Mr. Kishmir "has been informed by the police of a trial being initiated against him on charges of insulting the Security Forces because of an opinion article entitled 'The White House'."
Via social media (MSM), Mr. Kishmir, referring to the new "trial" noted that "today I was informed by the General Police Directorate about a trial (against me) because of an opinion article of mine (it may be the first trial of this kind). As part of the trial, in addition to a ban on leaving the country, they are asking for a prison sentence of up to 10 years."
Recall that shortly before the new "trial", Mr. Kishmir had been deported from Turkey on his return to the occupied territories from abroad with a stopover in Istanbul.
The T/C Bar Association reacted to the new development and its president announced that he would take over the defense of Mr. Kishmir. Hassan Esendagli, in a statement to the MDC on the new development, said that "we are going through a period when everything that worries us (lately) is happening with great speed. It is the practice of repressive regimes to investigate individuals for criminal cases because of thoughts, ideas, words and writings. We have no choice but to resist them."
At the heart of the new "trial" against Mr. Kishmir is an opinion article that was published at the time of the emergence of the new T/C leader. In this article, Mr. Kishmir strongly criticized Ankara for its interference in the internal political events of the TCs and the "presidential elections".
Kishmir speaks to CNA
For the new "trial", Mr. Kishmir shared his views with CNA and said that Ersin Tatar's leadership and Turkey's "embassy" in the occupied territories are behind the new development.
Kishmir also said that the "trial" will start on Monday. In the first phase of the "trial", Mr. Kishmir will object to the "prosecution's" request for bail because he does not wish to face the measure of banning him from leaving the occupied territories during the "trial" hearing.
"They want to oppress us. They seek our submission," says the T/C journalist.
Finally, Kishmir stresses that the T/C opposition will not back down in the face of pressure.
It is noted that earlier on Tuesday, the T/C journalists' association issued a call to the T/C political parties to amend the "legislation" concerning freedom of expression and free press in the occupied territories.
In a statement, the association said that "there is a need to amend laws that are restrictive, outdated and form the basis for many trials". For this project, the T/C journalists' association proposes the cooperation of T/C politicians with T/C journalists.
