[BR]NATO remains on high alert but NATO forces have not yet been deployed in the region, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on the sidelines of the developments in Ukraine.
NATO expects a large-scale Russian attack in Ukraine and has put its rapid reaction force on standby to defend its allies, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
"Everything suggests that Russia is planning a massive attack on Ukraine" after sending forces to the separatist Donbas provinces," Stoltenberg said after an emergency meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) at the pact's headquarters in Brussels.
NATO remains on high alert but no NATO forces have yet been deployed in the region, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on the sidelines of developments in Ukraine.
We condemn Russia's decision to recognize the independence of Donbas, Stoltenberg noted, noting that the Russian president's move to further ask the Russian parliament for permission to send the country's troops abroad further exacerbates Russian aggressive behavior.
We continue to ask Moscow to back down, he additionally stressed, commenting that it is never too late to stop the aggression.
As he pointed out, Russia has invaded Ukraine since 2014 (when it annexed the Crimean peninsula), and now they are seeing a new invasion.
At the same time, Stoltenberg stressed that the Alliance continues to monitor the ongoing challenges in the Donbas region and noted that NATO will continue to provide strong political support to Kiev.
The NATO chief also added that NATO members will continue to do what is necessary to shield the Alliance against aggressive moves, and stressed that 100 fighter jets are already in a state of heightened readiness.
