A letter to the Minister of Finance for an allowance for retired artists was sent by the General Secretary of AKEL

A letter on the restoration of the honorary allowance for retired artists was sent to the Minister of Finance by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou.

In the letter, according to a statement issued by AKEL, Mr Stefanou said that "every day I receive complaints that many retired artists face serious financial problems, with the result that they rely on the help of their friends and close relatives for their survival".

He notes that among the artists who need urgent and permanent help, "there are also top creators whose work has increased the stature of our small country."

"The honorary allowance granted a few years ago was a small but stimulating injection to enable our intellectual creators to make a living in relative comfort. Especially in these terribly difficult circumstances of the pandemic, when cultural creation has been hit very hard. I therefore urge you to reinstate the honorary allowance as a minimal sign of recognition of the most important contribution of people of culture to society and Cyprus."
