As the State Department spokesman noted, "Russia is engaging in covert and overtly malicious efforts to instrumentalize Orthodox identity to advance its own geopolitical interests by supporting some Orthodox Churches and their leaders while undermining others."
Continuing, the US official stressed the importance the US attaches to the promotion and protection of religious freedoms. "The protection of religious freedom or belief, including the freedom of religious minorities, continues to be a key element of U.S. foreign policy. Individuals should be free to make decisions about how they express their religious beliefs without outside interference, including from foreign governments," he said.
