"SOS" for the big employment problem, not just remaining, but swelling by the day, are being addressed by businessmen in the retail sector.
To the serious problem of staff shortages that already existed , the pandemic outbreak[/B] and the high numbers of cases that "keep" a significant proportion of workers at home have been added.
Speaking to the Cyprus Times, the General Secretary of the Pancyprian Retail Trade Association (PASYLE) Marios Antoniou said that the whole issue has a negative impact not only on the businesses themselves but also on the economy of the country in general.
"There is a procrastination by those responsible, while the problem is known and perceived by all" Mr. Antoniou noted, adding that members of the association expect to be given solutions for which there continues to be a delay. "There is also a relevant EU directive on the matter," he stresses. "Demand cannot be met by supply," he says, noting that the discussion on this has been going on since last September.
As the PASYLE SG explains, due to both covid and the large number of cases, a significant part of the staff is forced to stay at home either as cases or contacts making the task of the operators even more difficult."
"The existing staff is forced to work extra hours continuously with all that this entails, with physical and psychological fatigue. Unfortunately, in retail the physical presence of employees is mandatory" he concluded.
