The German Chancellor says that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline may never work
[/QUOTE]

The possibility that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may never work, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hinted in a statement, saying that "we are a long way from its operation, we are at a point where I wouldn't bet that it will work at some point."

It should be noted that since Tuesday, at the behest of Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, the pipeline's permitting procedures have been frozen.

Robert Habeck, who was also a former chairman of the Green Party, is considered the politician who finally convinced Olaf Scholz to go ahead with the move, following Russia's escalation on the Ukrainian crisis.

Mr. Habeck also took a stand on this issue and said that in his opinion the pipeline should not have been built from the beginning, thus criticizing the decision of former Chancellor Angela Merkel who had decided to build this pipeline that brings gas directly from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.

As Mr. Habeck said today, "in my opinion this project should not have been started. It is a big risk."

He - like most politicians in Germany - believes that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a weapon in Russia's hands, with which it is blackmailing the Europeans.

For this reason there should - as he noted - be a decoupling from Russian gas. "It is a matter of national security and geopolitics to become independent of Russian gas," he said.

Regarding Russia's threats, the Vice Chancellor noted that German consumers would be supported by the government.
