The need to show solidarity and a fair distribution of the burden resulting from the increased migratory flows and asylum applications, in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine, Rita Theodorou Superman pointed out from the floor of the 16th General Assembly of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA), whose work started on Wednesday in the United Arab Emirates.

He also denounced Turkey for systematically instrumentalizing this humanitarian issue.

The House of Representatives is participating with a delegation consisting of MPs Andreas Pasiourtidis (leader), Rita Theodorou Superman, Christos Orphanidis and Charalambos Theopeptou.

According to a Parliamentary announcement, the Plenary Assembly addressed the issues of universal access to quality education, migration, economic recovery from the effects of pandemic COVID-19 and climate change and environmental protection, on which relevant resolutions were adopted.

The Resolution on Inclusive Education included an amendment by the Cypriot delegation, which calls on those MSM Member States that have not acceded to the UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education to do so.

In her intervention on the issue of migration, Ms Theodorou Superman, referring to the tragic refugee crisis unfolding in Ukraine, highlighted the need to show solidarity and a fair distribution of the burden resulting from the increased migratory flows and asylum applications.

These principles should be reflected in the new European Pact on Immigration and Asylum, which should include an effective relocation mechanism and strong incentive-based readmission agreements with countries outside the European Union. Superman referred to the large number of migrants and asylum seekers that Cyprus receives and the serious impact this has on the economy, society and security of the country.

She pointed out that around 85% of asylum seekers in the Republic of Cyprus are forwarded from Turkey through the occupied territories to the areas under the control of the Cypriot government, denouncing Turkey for systematically instrumentalising this humanitarian issue.

The aim, he stressed, must be to address the root causes of the massive migratory and refugee flows, underlining the need for decent reception and living conditions for migrants, an effective and secure readmission and reintegration mechanism, as well as intensified efforts to combat illegal trafficking and trafficking networks.

In the relevant Resolution adopted by the Plenary, an amendment by the Cypriot delegation was included, which reinforces the stance of the CSM on the obligation of states to assume their responsibility and show solidarity with frontline states.
