Coronavirus outbreaks in camps too - Manageable situation, says MoD - Groups and safepasses will be used to return them to their units - Incentive to ration 5 days of honorary leave expires at the end of the year

The spread of coronavirus in the community and the increase in cases in recent days has experts concerned, ahead of the holidays.

Cases of covid are also spotted daily in the camps, but the situation is manageable, according to Defence Ministry spokesman Christos Pieris.

Talking to Cyprus Times, Mr.Pieris noted that yesterday checks identified 10 new cases, while there are currently 123 active cases in camps nationwide, which are under quarantine.

"We also have 60 people in self-limitation due to covid. Most of the cases are detected by the checks carried out outside the camps, so positive cases are detected in time and we avoid further dispersal within the camps," he clarified.Pieris.

Asked about the holidays and whether specific procedures will be made for the exits of National Guardsmen, he explained that the soldiers will go for the holidays with groups and will all return to their units with their safepass.

Those National Guardsmen who are vaccinated will be allowed to enter the camps with their safepasses and those who are unvaccinated will have to return with negative tests.

Finally, on December 31, the incentive given by the Ministry for an honorary 5-day leave for those National Guardsmen who go for vaccination also expires. Cyprus Times reports that there is no intention to renew this incentive.
