Police officers were also injured in the incident
A bloody incident occurred Friday night in Phoenix, Arizona, in which nine police officers were injured and two people, a woman and the alleged perpetrator of the attack, were killed.
Five police officers were taken to a hospital after being shot. One of them was in serious condition, however he is now reportedly out of danger, Phoenix Police Chief Jerry Williams said at a news conference broadcast by local television networks.
Police were called to the area after reports of shots fired at a home near 51st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Street. An officer was shot by the alleged shooter as he approached the home, according to Williams.
"There was a baby in the house, who at one point was put in a stroller and left outside. As the officers went to safely remove the baby, the gunman started shooting again, wounding four other officers," Williams said, adding that the officers then returned fire.
A woman was found wounded inside the house and died a few hours later.
The gunman had been holed up inside the house for several hours. When police officers raided the house around 7 am (local time) they found the man dead, as reported by ABC 15 television network.
The man in question was reportedly the former partner of the unfortunate woman, with whom she had a child, possibly the baby involved in the incident. It has not been determined whether the assailant ended his own life, and his motive remains unclear, according to police sources.
Williams called the incident "senseless" during the press conference. "It didn't have to happen, but it still happens over and over again," the Phoenix police chief said.
