The girl was facially disfigured and lost 70% of her vision in her right eye. The perpetrator was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison but due to a change in legislation due to a pandemic he was released earlier with restrictions.
According to Turkish media, after his arrest, the perpetrator "bombarded" the victim with messages of love and apology and asked the 20-year-old girl to forgive him. The young girl was persuaded to withdraw the complaint she had filed against him but after the uproar on social media she asked her lawyer to proceed.
Immediately after his release from prison in the first days of December, the perpetrator proposed to the victim and she accepted. The girl's father Yasar Ozek said of his daughter's marriage: "She got married without our knowledge. I fought for her for years and now everything has become futile."
The 23-year-old's lawyer said that the offender's release has nothing to do with his marriage and that if the law had not been changed due to the pandemic, he would have served his sentence normally.
The couple has been severely criticized on social media but are keeping silent, at least for now. After the wedding, many online users have been harshly critical of the young girl for her decision to join her life with the man who disfigured her.
"If I am asked who is the stupidest person in the world, I will answer by giving this woman's name. Next time this man will skin her alive," one user wrote. While another commented: "Her forgiveness should not prevent his punishment. It's a shame, I hope it doesn't happen, but this marriage will end in a month or two and the poor woman will be left with the violence she experienced."
