Written reply by Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos to AKEL "The champions in populism now want to become judges and decide before the Supreme Court"
"We are not surprised by the behaviour of AKEL.The champions in populism now want to become judges and decide before the Supreme Court on the appeal of the President of the Republic," Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, stresses in a written statement.
"We remind them that in democracies, what is legal and what is not is decided in the courts on the basis of the Constitution and the laws," Pelecanos said.
He also points out that "AKEL either does not understand or deliberately ignores that the President, exercising his constitutional rights, appeals to the Supreme Court on a matter of principle concerning the competences of the executive and legislative powers."
"It is a given that he will fully respect the decisions of the Supreme Court. We hope that AKEL will be ready to show the same respect and that it will not again be obliged to demonstrate outside courts and police stations as it did in the past for "political prisoners", he concludes.
