Sasoli's body will be buried on Friday
Today from 10.30 in the morning until 6 p.m., David Sassoli's body is to be laid out for a popular pilgrimage in the Della Protomoteca Hall of the Rome City Hall.
This is the same room in which Romans leave a flower or say a prayer for departed loved ones for the long journey. As it happened last summer, and with Rafaela Kara. On Friday, at 12 noon, the funeral is to be held, at public expense.
This was decided by Mario Draghi's government, as a sign of respect and recognition of Sassoli's important contribution to both journalism and politics.
In statements to Italian public television Rai, and again today, close associates of the former President of the European Parliament referred to their particular social sensitivity: as they pointed out, for the first time, on Sassoli's initiative, the European Parliament was so strongly involved in supporting many people in difficulty - even without food - due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
The funeral of the Italian journalist and politician on Friday will be attended by, among others, President of the Italian Republic Sergio Matarella, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Sal Michel, European heads of state and officials.
