Russia's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance is impossible because the West does not want to have comparable rivals with similar influence in the international arena, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an exclusive interview with journalist Vladimir Salaviov and on his YouTube channel.

In response to the question whether it is possible for Russia to join NATO under certain conditions, especially on equal and partnership terms, Lavrov replied that he does not see such a possibility.

"I do not see such a situation, because the whole process revolves neither around NATO nor the European Union, it revolves around the fact that the West does not want to have any comparable rivals with similar influence in the international arena," Lavrov said.

This attitude of Western countries, according to the minister, explains this "hysteria against the rise of China," which has accepted the rules of the game that the West "introduced into the global economy" and with Western rules "has surpassed the West on its own turf."
