[/P]Mr. Putin said his country could not tolerate what he called threats from Ukraine and warned against any foreign interference, warning that if there was any Moscow would retaliate immediately, Russian news agencies reported.
He said the circumstances called for decisive action by Russia and assured that the aim was not to impose occupation. He urged Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their weapons and go home.
Vladimir Putin added that the responsibility for any bloodshed to follow would be borne by the "Ukrainian regime".
Minutes after the Russian president spoke, journalists reported hearing the sound of artillery volleys near Kiev and gunfire in the vicinity of Boryspil airport.
