A missile attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in the city of Arbil, capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in northern Iraq.
There were no casualties from the attack, according to Saman Barzani, the local government's health minister. The missiles were fired from Iran, a U.S. official (unnamed) told Reuters. There has, so far, been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
"Twelve ballistic missiles" were fired from a location outside Iraqi territory targeting Arbil, according to Reuters citing the Kurdistan Region Counterterrorism Service. The missile attack occurred near the US consulate and airport.
A State Department spokesman called it an "outrageous attack" and confirmed that no Americans were injured and there was no damage to the US consulate. The Kurdistan24 television network published images of damage to its premises in its social media posts.
"We condemn this terrorist attack launched against many parts of Arbil, we call on residents to remain calm," said Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrur Barzani.
The last attack on the city of Arbil occurred last September, when drones struck the airport with no casualties.
