[B-2]We are experiencing the biggest wave of the pandemic, vaccination of all ages is necessary, EU Health Commissioner stresses What she told Cypriot journalists in Strasbourg[B-3]
[B-4][B-5]We are currently experiencing the biggest wave of the pandemic[B-6], said EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou, noting that based on recent data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)[B-7] the epidemiological situation in the EU and the wider European area is characterised as very worrying.[B-8][B-9][B-10]In her statements to Cypriot journalists in Strasbourg, where the plenary session of the European Parliament is underway, Ms. Kyriakidou stressed the need for citizens to be vaccinated against COVID-19, underlining that vaccination is a matter of personal and social responsibility to protect ourselves, our surroundings and society at large.[B-11][B-12]She also called on parents to vaccinate their children, noting that vaccines for children have also been approved by the European Medicines Agency. He also mentioned that pregnant women also need to get vaccinated to protect both themselves and their child, noting that this is the message of the European Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with whom he discussed this issue.[B-13][B-14]On the issue of medicines, he said that three have been approved by the European Medicines Agency and that he expects two more to be approved this week.[B-15][B-16]He also said that they are moving forward with a joint bidding process so that Member States can place their orders and have access to medicines at the same time.[B-17][B-18]She also noted that a portfolio of 10 potential treatment regimens has been created.[B-19][B-20]Referring to the current data, Ms. Kyriakidou said that currently[B-21] 90% of cases involve the Delta mutation, while noting that the Omicron mutation is spreading extremely fast.[B-22] She noted that it is expected that the rapid spread of Omicron will put new pressure on the health systems of Member States.[B-23]

[B-24]He reported that there are currently[B-25] 797 cases identified in a population of 100,000.[B-26] He noted that 66% of the European population has been vaccinated with both doses of the vaccine, and 62 million booster doses were given in the EU as of yesterday.[B-27][B-28]Ms. Kyriakidou said that vaccination is considered more important than ever as things stand now, because we have the Delta mutation and a very rapid transmission of the Omicron mutation.[B-29][B-30]We do not yet have a full scientific picture of the Omicron mutation, we know about its transmissibility and what is imperative is vaccination as quickly as possible and with the booster dose, she noted.[B-31][B-32]She said that vaccines provide us with a very important protection so that we do not get seriously ill or lose our lives.[B-33][B-34]She added that enough vaccine doses have been secured to cover the European population, including the child population, and with the booster dose.[B-35][B-36]According to the figures, [B-37]last week about 17 million extra doses were given.[B-38]This is good, but we can do more, the Health Commissioner said.[B-39][B-40]She said the message to be given is that people should go ahead with their vaccination and that the booster dose protects them.[B-41][B-42]Kyriakidou said she has called for a targeted information campaign in member states towards unvaccinated population groups to counter misinformation through information with scientific evidence.[B-43][B-44]Source: CNA[B-45][B-45]
