More than 536 tons of clothes and shoes were collected in the red bins of the Municipality of Athens Increase by 158% in 2021

Athenians are the biggest allies of the Municipality in the strategic plan for the recycling and reuse of clothing and footwear collected in the red bins of the capital. The numbers recorded during the two years of the pandemic are a strong proof of this.

Specifically, in 2021, more than 536 tons of clothes and shoes were placed in the 250 special bins located in all seven municipalities of Athens, a number that exceeds by 158% the quantity of the corresponding items collected in the previous year (2020). Of these items, the social services of the Municipality of Athens used and offered more than 4 tons of clothes to individuals and families in need, while this year, due to the even greater response, an additional 7 tons of clothes (11 in total), in excellent condition, are expected to be distributed.

"The citizens, in the midst of a pandemic, proved that recycling is now established in their consciousness and becomes part of their culture. The City's recycling programme is, among other things, a building block of the culture of everyday life. We are delighted that Athenians are responding to this project in an impressive way and for an additional reason: Because it also has an important social dimension, as it supports in a substantial way vulnerable groups of the population of Athens, combining a sustainability initiative with an act of social character", stresses in a statement the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.

What we collect inside the red bins

At the "red" points, which are located in central points of the city, those interested can place:

Clean clothes (men's, women's and children's)

Shoes in pairs (men's, women's and children's)

[BC][BC][BC]

Linen (pillows, sheets, duvet covers, etc.)

Accessories (belts, bags, etc.)

)

It should be noted that recycling significantly reduces the percentage of clothes that end up in the waste stream, as even those that are unsuitable for reuse are recycled in order to create cleaning fabrics or used to create overalls, sound and heat insulation material, car seat padding, etc.The clothing recycling programme is implemented in cooperation with Recycom.
