With the global medical community once again on alert, by the monkeypox disease, from which cases are increasing,[/B] each country is evaluating recommendations and data and taking precautionary measures for its population and visitors.

The Ministry of Health, is ready to deal with possible outbreaks of monkeypox disease,[/B] officials have said, with attention expectedly turning to the tourist season that is just around the corner.

Today's meeting with all relevant services

A meeting has been scheduled for today, at 9 am, with all relevant services - Medical and Pharmaceutical Services, OCYPY - in order to make the appropriate preparations and draw up a management and action plan for such incidents.

Yesterday, recommendations were also released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) urging European Union (and EEA) countries to focus on early detection, management, contact tracing and reporting of new cases of monkeypox.

Countries should also update their contact detection mechanisms, diagnostic capacity for orthopox viruses and review the availability of smallpox vaccines, antivirals and personal protective equipment for health professionals.

In isolation 21 days

Infected individuals should remain isolated until crusts drop and should particularly avoid close contact with immunosuppressed persons and pets. Abstinence from sexual activity and close physical contact is also recommended until the rash has healed. Most cases can be kept at home with supportive care.

Close contacts of monkeypox cases should be monitored on their own for the development of symptoms for 21 days after the last exposure. The ECDC will continue to monitor developments closely and will update the risk assessment as new data and information becomes available, according to the statement issued yesterday, Monday.

In a communication that the Cyprus Times had with a competent source from the Ministry of Health, we were told that there is preparedness. Asked whether Cyprus, too, will announce a 21-day isolation period for monkeypox cases, we were told that there are clear recommendations from the ECDC and they are usually followed, however this is something that will be discussed at today's meeting.
