[CYPRUS TIMES] "Rain" of complaints for traffic violations in the last 24 hours

In 875 out-of-court complaints for various traffic offences, the Police made 875 complaints nationwide, as part of the prevention of serious and fatal road traffic collisions

A total of 875 out-of-court complaints for various traffic offences resulted from roadside checks by members of the Special Motorcycle Squad (E.O.M.O., the Headquarters and Avdimou Road Accident Prevention Units (RAPUs) and members of the Traffic Police, on motorways and secondary roads nationwide.

The nationwide traffic checks were conducted between the hours of 6am yesterday 18/2/2022 and 6am today 19/2/2022, as part of the prevention of road traffic collisions, the deterrence and suppression of motor vehicle and motorcycle nuisance offences and juvenile delinquency.

The majority of the complaints concerned offences which are proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions. Of these, 184 complaints stand out, which were carried out for exceeding the speed limit and 145 complaints for not wearing a seat belt, 78 complaints for driving with hands not free (using a mobile phone), and 17 complaints for driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is noted that in three cases in Paphos province, the same number of drivers were found to be driving under the influence of drugs, after a drug test showed positive results.

In addition, 65 drivers were found to be driving their vehicles without being covered by a certificate of fitness and registration, while another 8 drivers were found to be driving vehicles which were registered and 4 drivers who were driving vehicles which were registered as immobilised, while the police detained one vehicle.

There were also another 59 complaints relating to offences concerning tachographs on trucks and/or buses.

Finally, the Police made another 294 out-of-court complaints for various other traffic offences.



Targeted traffic controls continue daily, throughout the 24-hour period, throughout the road network nationwide. The sole objective is to inculcate proper road awareness among all road users and to prevent fatal and serious traffic collisions.
