Women noncommissioned officers of the AF who were recruited as volunteers took to the streets today. They were outside the Presidential Palace protesting against the unfair treatment they have been subjected to because of their gender.

A demonstration protesting discrimination against female non-commissioned officers outside the Presidential Palace was held by citizens, during which they called on the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the Council of Ministers "to respect in practice", the report of the Commissioner for Administration, as the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Body regarding gender discrimination against female NCOs in the field of employment, who served as Volunteer NCOs of the 5th, 6th and 7th ranks.

As per a statement issued on the protest, parents of the women NCOs and women sensitized against discrimination against women took part in the protest.

According to the resolution adopted at the event, it called for "immediate redressal of the adverse consequences suffered by women NCOs as a consequence of prohibited gender discrimination at work" and "to restore them to the permanent post of Sergeant, from the date on which they would have been appointed had it not been for the discrimination on grounds of sex against them', that is to say, to appoint them to the permanent post of sergeant retroactively by 12 13 years, paying them the corresponding remuneration of the A4 scale which they were unlawfully deprived of, as they claimed.

Through the protest the unacceptable attitude, as stated in the petition, was condemned, "by the Ministry of Defence which despite the fact that in the year 2016 it made an amendment to the Regulations that introduced unequal treatment and gender discrimination in employment for women NCOs and despite the fact that 6 years have passed since then, nevertheless, to this day, stubbornly refuses to make reparation for the negative consequences suffered by female NCOs, as a consequence of its own actions, namely, the violation of the fundamental inalienable human right of these female NCOs to non-discriminatory gender discrimination at work."

"The Ministry of Defence, during the period between the appointment of the said women NCOs as Volunteers in the year 1993, until 2016, when the regulations introducing prohibited sex discrimination in employment were repealed, i.e. for a period of 13 years, flagrantly violated the fundamental inalienable human right of the said women NCOs to non-discrimination on the basis of sex in employment," it added.

The tremendous negative consequences, it said, "inflicted on women NCOs by prohibited sex discrimination at work are documented in the report of the Commissioner for Administration, as the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Body, regarding sex discrimination against women NCOs in the field of employment, dated 17 December 2021.

According to the resolution, "the Commissioner of Administration as the Equality Authority, condemns the unacceptable attitude of the Ministry of Defence, namely, that although in the year 2016 it made the amendment of the Regulations that introduced unequal treatment and gender discrimination in employment and although 6 years have passed since then, however, to this day, it stubbornly refuses to accept the enormous responsibility for its actions and to make full reparation for the consequences suffered by the female NCOs in question."

It states that "the female permanent Petty Officers, who served as Volunteer Petty Officers of the 5th, 6th and 7th ranks, were victims of 'Prohibited Sex Discrimination in Employment'" and adds that "the male Volunteer Petty Officers recruited at the same time as the female Volunteer Petty Officers of the 5th, 6th and 7th ranks were victims of 'Prohibited Sex Discrimination in Employment'"[/B] and adds that "the male Volunteer Petty Officers who were recruited at the same time as the female Volunteer Petty Officers of the 5th, 6th and 7th ranks were victims of 'Prohibited Sex Discrimination in Employment'"[/B], 6 and 7 series, i.e. the years 1993, 1995 and 1997, and although they had the same qualifications and seniority, were appointed 12 to 13 years earlier than them'.

It is also stated that the different advancement that the male volunteer NCOs who were recruited in the same period of time as the female volunteer NCOs, i.e. the years 1993, 1995 and 1997, "consisted in the fact that they received more promotions than these female NCOs, with the result that they now hold the rank of Lieutenant or Sergeant Major and are hierarchically superior to them."
