Their opposition to the involvement of the British bases in Cyprus in the Ukrainian crisis, on the occasion of the arrival of four Typhoon fighter jets for patrols in Eastern Europe, was expressed by protesters outside the Akrotiri bases.
Speaking at the peaceful protest event, organised by the Pancyprian Peace Council, its President, Tasos Kostas Kostas, condemned "the participation of the British Bases in war preparations in our wider region".
Cyprus is a living example of how foreign bases do not solve problems and do not provide security but promote militarisation and perpetuate tension, he said, stressing that our country "is a living example of how internal conflicts can be exploited by foreign countries to force peoples to crawl on foreign rails".
The crisis in Russia-Ukraine relations is itself a constant source of danger, he said, noting that the presence of so many troops from foreign countries is an extremely dangerous development.
Saying that over the past 20 years, 14 new member states, mostly from Eastern Europe, have joined NATO and the official excuses were that this would promote peace and security, he stressed that instead, today, more than ever before, we are seeing greater tensions, military spending and war preparations.
Never before, he continued, has a catastrophic war been so likely in the heart of Europe and stressed that "the tension is being carried over to Cyprus with the recent stationing of four Eurofigther Typhoon warplanes at Akrotiri."
We believe that the presence of the British bases has never been a factor of stability and has never been favourable for Cyprus, the PSC President said, and more importantly, he continued, "their participation in any military confrontation in the region exposes us to serious risks and undermines cooperation with neighbouring countries."[/B]

We believe that the presence of British bases has never been a factor of stability and has never been favourable for Cyprus, the PSC President said, and much more, he continued, "their participation in any military confrontation in the region exposes us to serious risks and undermines cooperation with neighbouring countries.
The GCC, he noted, condemns the involvement of the BBs in military conflicts and demands the removal of these aircraft.
In addition, he said that a military conflict on the Ukrainian-Russian border would not only harm the peoples of the countries involved, but would be fatal for the whole of Europe.
"War preparations should once again give way to diplomacy. Peace cannot be held hostage to strategic and energy interests."
The protesters handed a memorandum to a representative of the BB, demanding "the immediate dismantling of British bases as well as all foreign military bases in the countries of our region and in the world."

[PThe BBs, they added, are a remnant of the colonial regime, putting the peoples of the region in constant danger and violating international law.
"The peoples of our region have nothing to divide them and our common enemy is the imperialism that breeds wars, chauvinism and militarism," the resolution states.
It notes that "Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots are fighting for peace to prevail in our land, we are fighting for a solution that will reunite Cyprus and away from foreign armies and guardians, we are fighting for our land to become a bridge of peace and cooperation between peoples."
