The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (YPPAN) is particularly sensitive to issues of safe use of the Internet and offers, through the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, a series of programmes and actions, The Minister of Education, Prodromos Prodromou, said on Tuesday in his address at the online workshop, held in the framework of the World Internet Safety Day.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the Minister noted the programmes of the Educational Technology Sector: "Safe School for the Internet" and "Little Teachers for the Internet", in which teachers and students at all levels have the opportunity to participate in the planning and implementation of Internet safety activities.

He said that in addition, the Ministry of Education, in response to the continuous developments in online and digital technologies, has adopted a variety of related policies, on practices and information for their safe, effective and creative use.

He further noted that the Ministry of Education, in response to the need to protect children and young people in the face of the growing challenges of the Internet and digital technologies, under the coordination of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, developed and coordinates the "National Strategy for a Better Internet for Children in Cyprus", thus formulating a comprehensive National Information and Awareness Programme for children, teachers and parents.

He also mentioned that since 1 July 2016, actions concerning the use of the Internet, safely and responsibly, are supported, through the project "Cyprus Internet Safety Centre-CYberSafety" coordinated by the Pedagogical Institute, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, aiming to create a Safe Internet culture.

The Minister of Education also referred to the operation through his Ministry of the Helpline and Complaints Line 1480, which is now well established, providing advisory and other services on the Internet.

Mr. Prodromou also said that the widespread use of modern technologies, in general, and the Internet in particular, are an integral part of various aspects of modern life and especially, since the spring of 2020, when the pandemic coronavirus crisis (COVID-19) inevitably led to an even greater use of Information and Communication Technologies, further demonstrating the importance of using digital technologies in a critical, responsible and effective manner.

He pointed out that it is well documented that engaging children and young people in online environments and digital technologies provides a wide range of opportunities and experiences for them to learn, create, innovate, communicate, collaborate and participate in society.

He also called for voices to be united - again this year - in a collective effort to raise awareness and encourage positive change on the Internet under the slogan: "Together for a better Internet".
