The Ministerial Conference on Environment recognizes Cyprus' initiatives, says President "Today's Summit is one of the most important"

The holding of the 9th Ministerial Conference on the Environment in Europe in Cyprus is a result of recognition of the actions and initiatives undertaken by the Cypriot Government to address one of the most important problems facing humanity, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday.

Upon his arrival at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia for the opening of the Summit, President Anastasiades, when asked by journalists, said that today's Summit is one of the most important, as it is the first time that it is being held in Europe and particularly in the Mediterranean, with the Republic of Cyprus as host country.

"This is a result of the recognition of the actions and initiatives undertaken by the Cypriot Government to address one of the most important problems that humanity has to face", he said.

President Anastasiades also said that "we are not limited to today's Summit, which, I repeat, is very important. Our initiative to address climate change is also manifested in a number of other initiatives, such as the chairmanship of the United Nations Coordinating Committee on Education, but also important other initiatives such as the development and positions that Ministers have adopted through our own initiative in Sharm El Sheikh, where the Climate Change Summit, COP27, will take place."

He said that on the sidelines of COP27, he and the President of Egypt will chair and present the results of hundreds of scientists who have prepared relevant actions concerning the Eastern Mediterranean and neighbouring countries.

Asked about his participation in the 1st Meeting of the European Political Community and the Informal Summit of the European Council in Prague, and how prepared the Republic of Cyprus is to highlight Turkey's destabilizing role in the Eastern Mediterranean region, President Anastasiades responded by saying "sufficiently well-informed, so that what we say will be taken seriously. Asked about this, he said that there is full coordination with Greece
