Preliminary investigation into 68 cases of child abuse by members of the Catholic Church in Spain Allegations of child abuse by priests and possible cover-up by the Church

Spanish authorities are investigating 68 cases of sexual abuse of minors by members of the Catholic Church, it was announced today by the Attorney General's office, which for the first time released official data on these cases.

Allegations of child abuse by priests and their possible cover-up by the Church are only now emerging in Spain, many years after similar scandals rocked the Catholic Church in other countries such as the US, Ireland and France. The prosecutor's office released a file containing preliminary investigations conducted in 17 regions involving the sexual abuse of minors in churches, schools and other religious institutions. However, no further details were given.

Two months ago, El Pais newspaper wrote that it had discovered that 1,200 such complaints had been made between 1943 and 2018. In January, the Synod of Bishops said it would set up committees, at the diocesan level, to hear victims' complaints.

Last week, the ruling Socialist Party proposed setting up an independent commission on the same issue.

On its website, the Spanish Church has a special page on how to handle such cases. It says, among other things, that if it receives a complaint all the evidence it gathers will be sent immediately to the Vatican. It also encourages victims to speak openly and make a complaint to local prosecutors.
