[/P]The President of the Democratic Co-operation Party, Marios Karoyan, proposed on Sunday that a government of national unity or the broadest possible acceptance be formed in the 2023 presidential elections, with a common presidential candidate to guarantee the implementation of a common governance programme, adding that if the proposal is not met in March, a cycle of consultations will begin, with the party certain to have a say and a role in the new governance of the country.
In his speech at the party's 1st Pancyprian election congress, he expressed the view that with East-West, US, Russia and China relations resembling a new cold war, Turkey's position as a regional power may be strengthened and said that in the face of these facts, unity should be opposed.
He further said that the Democratic Party encourages, under certain conditions, any initiative for mutually effective Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), which under the auspices of the UN and the EU will help create the right climate for the resumption of talks aimed at a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.
Referring to the work of the Conference, he said that what we seek is that this work marks the beginning of a new path for the Cypriot people, to whom a new realistic narrative for their future and their children is due.
He defined the character of the PPCD as a party of a new political ethos and style, without aphorisms, obsessions and ideologies, with arguments that have the power of logic, without insults, whose members do not appeal to the memory, express creative forces and respond to the challenges of the times.
Further, Mr. Karoyan said that it is necessary to adapt the way of thinking and the way of governance to the new reality that is dawning around the world and to structure the economic-social model that invests in human resources and the production of value-added services.
He added that policies must be implemented to protect future generations from rapid climate change, desertification, the indiscriminate waste of natural resources and overconsumption that multiplies dependence on off-Cyprus production centres, foreign markets and international factors that we cannot control.
After clarifying that "we neither want the state to become a businessman, nor do we want the public sector to become bloated by stifling private initiative", he said, among other things, that the PPP supports the adoption of a minimum wage, the fight against undeclared work, the change of the state's subsidy philosophy.
He also referred to the urgent need to make interventions immediately in order to avoid the collapse of the existing Health System and the urgent need to put an end to corruption, complications, opacity and the problematic functioning of the justice system.
A strong political will, a radical change of mindset, deep cuts in the relations between the citizen state and the state-economic power are required, he continued.
After stating that society's disdain for institutions has hit red, he said that the stakes in the 2023 presidential elections are extremely national.
He then appealed to all political forces to pledge to dedicate the next five years to their country and its children, to forget any party rivalries and uncharitable Byzantineisms, and for all the forces of the democratic arc to jointly prioritise national priorities.
With regard to the proposal for the formation of a government of national unity or the widest possible acceptance, he explained that the common governance programme should have as its main pillars addressing the challenges of Turkey and achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem within the UN parameters, managing the economy as a national issue, strengthening the rule of law, the exploitation of Cyprus' natural wealth and geostrategic advantages, the reduction of bureaucracy and the introduction of effective methods to deal with the everyday problems of citizens, the strengthening of the welfare state and social fabric with more modern and effective policies, and dealing with migration.
Among these axes, he included the creation of prospects for young people in the modern and competitive era, the transition to the era of digital transformation and the practical implementation of the European Green Deal.
He also said that the proposal is to arrive at a common political manifesto and a common commitment, regardless of any party advantage or cost, and its implementation in practice.
Karoyan also thanked the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe for welcoming the PPP into their ranks.
Co-Chairman of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Ilhan Kyuchyuk in an audio-visual message expressed the position that the momentum of exiting the crisis caused by the pandemic should be seized. He said that the Cyprus problem is an issue at its heart and a solution must be found for the people of Cyprus on the basis of European and international law that will bring prosperity, freedom and justice to the island. He also said that he expects that in the upcoming European elections the DPA will be represented in the European Parliament.
NEO.DPA President Michael Ioannou said that the newly established youth organization of the DPA will be a platform from which truths will be heard. He added that the organisation wants and will work for a reunited Cyprus without armies and guarantees and added that the youth of NEO.DPA will be good at what they do
In the framework of the conference, the establishment of women's and rural organisations of the party and a scientific council were announced.
