Pope Benedict XVI knew about the sexual abuse of children by priests while he was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1981, according to an archdiocesan report, CNN reports.
The report refutes claims by the pontiff who insists he denies any knowledge of the major sex abuse scandal, with pedophile priests in the Catholic Church abusing underage children for decades.
"He was informed of the facts," lawyer Martin Push said in announcing the findings of the investigation.
"We believe he can be charged with misconduct in four cases," he added.
He revealed that two of those cases involve abuses that occurred during Benedict's tenure, while the perpetrators are so far in place.
"The priests continued to work without any sanction whatsoever. The Church did nothing at all," he added.
