Police will handle issue of possible involvement of Cypriots in rape ring as it should be handled, says the Ministry of Justice. Justice

The confidence that the Cyprus Police will proceed swiftly to investigate the matter regarding allegations that Cypriots are involved in a rape and sexual exploitation ring was expressed by Justice and Public Order Minister Stefi Drakou, calling on anyone with information to come forward to the Police.

Responding to a question about activist allegations of a cover-up following the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Cyprus Police and Social Welfare Services for the handling and protection of potential and identified victims of trafficking, Drakou said "the Police, as I have repeatedly stated, are handling the whole issue in the right direction." In order to investigate, there must be information, she added.

"Unfortunately, so far we have not received any information, either from (an activist from Greece, who reported that there are Cypriots involved in a rape and sexual exploitation ring after a case of rape of a 24-year-old girl in Thessaloniki) Mr Gioni or anyone else," the minister said.

"I call on anyone who has information on the matter to give it to our Police, which I have no doubt will proceed swiftly to investigate the matter and will move and handle the matter as it should be," she added.

According to information she had from the Police Chief, she said, "is that so far we have not received the email that Mr Gionis promised and the information from Greece is that so far Cyprus is not involved in the whole matter."
