Dangerous chemicals in toys placed on the Cypriot market

In the framework of the implementation of the Chemical Substances Legislation, the Labour Inspection Department carried out a campaign to check products made of plastic placed on the Cypriot market. During the campaign, 8 samples of toys were taken to check their phthalates content.

Phthalates[/B] are substances classified as toxic for reproduction and are included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, products containing certain phthalates in concentrations higher than 0.1% by weight in plasticised material must not be placed on the market.

Following laboratory analysis of the samples carried out by the General State Laboratory, phthalates were detected in 3 out of 8 samples in concentrations higher than those specified in the legislation. The non-compliant products are shown in the Table below.

In addition, Chlorinated Short Chain Paraffins (SCCPs), substances classified as Persistent Organic Pollutants, were detected in 2 of the 8 samples. These substances are not allowed to be contained in consumer products in concentrations higher than 0.15% by mass of material.

The Labour Inspection Department informs the consumer public that it has already started a procedure of immediate withdrawal from the Cypriot market and destruction of non-compliant products.
