100 NATO warplanes on alert 100 NATO warplanes The convening of an emergency meeting of the Alliance's heads of state had been requested earlier by Macron and Johnson "February 24 is a terrible day for Europe", said Olaf Scholz
Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, announced that an Extraordinary Summit of NATO countries will be held tomorrow, Friday 25 February, via teleconference.
Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said that the Alliance will deploy more forces on its eastern flank following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and added that more than 100 warplanes have been put on alert.
"We have convened a teleconference summit tomorrow to analyse the way forward," Stoltenberg said during a press conference after an extraordinary meeting of NATO ambassadors, adding that "we must respond with renewed determination and even greater unity."
"Peace on our continent has been shattered," Stoltenberg denounced. "Russia is using violence to try to rewrite history and deprive Ukraine of its free and independent path," he stressed.
Ukraine is not a member of NATO and the Alliance Secretary General explained that there are no NATO troops in the country.
"We have no plans to send NATO troops to Ukraine."
"We have no plans to send NATO troops to Ukraine. Everything we are doing is defensive," he noted.
However, the Alliance is going to strengthen its eastern wing, according to Stoltenberg.
At the same time, NATO has activated its defence plans to facilitate the movement of troops, he explained.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron had called for a meeting of Atlantic Alliance heads of state and government on the Ukraine issue to be convened as soon as possible.
At the same time, Macron is expected to address the French people in a speech. It is noted that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also called for a NATO summit in the early hours of today.
"We are talking about Putin's war February 24 is a terrible day for Europe" says Solts
"February 24 is a terrible day for Ukraine and for Europe." Chancellor Olaf Scholz said and called on President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw his troops from Ukraine, noting that the toughest sanctions will be imposed on Russia.
"With his attack on Ukraine, Putin has once again flagrantly violated international law. He is causing anguish and destruction to his immediate neighbours, a brother nation of Russia. He is endangering the lives of countless people. It calls into question the peace order on our continent. There is no excuse for any of this, this is Putin's war," the Chancellor said, and once again expressed Germany's full solidarity with the Ukrainian government and its citizens.
"The aim is to make it clear to Russia that they must pay a high price for their actions. Putin made a big mistake," Solts continued, announcing an extraordinary Bundestag meeting on Sunday, a conference call with G7 leaders and consultations within the EU and NATO. "The situation is very serious. It is positive that we were prepared," he said."
Solts also assured NATO member states in Eastern Europe that they would have the full support of the Alliance. "I assure them of our care. We will stand by your side," he said, reiterating his call for Germans in Ukraine to leave the country immediately.
