The cardiac arrest of the 9-year-old girl and her sudden death How the three children perished Her sudden death and the conclusions of the coroners on the sudden deaths of the three children that have shocked the nation Why the prosecution moved
The connecting link between the three sudden deaths of the little girls of the Daskalakis family in Patras, whose case is being followed with particular interest by public opinion, will be sought by the officers of the Homicide Department who have taken over the case.
The experienced police officers will investigate the manner and circumstances of death, such as the days they were hospitalized in the hospital, the medication they were given and all persons who came into contact and were next to the girls, such as medical and nursing staff, but also relatives.
Crucial to the investigations will be the results of the histological and toxicological tests of 9-year-old Georgina, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest about two weeks ago, but these will be ready in about a month. At the same time, the authorities are also examining an unknown incident with Georgina, who in April 2021, a month after the death of -just 7 months old- Iris, was taken with convulsions to the Karamandaneio General Children's Hospital of Patras, where she underwent a full cardiological examination.
Suddenly, and while she was alone in the ward (ed. "the doctors were absent, her mother accompanied her," the report said) she had a cardiac arrest. Doctors managed to revive her within eight minutes, but the little girl suffered encephalopathy. After this episode, she was fitted with a defibrillator - at a hospital in Athens.
Ioannis Papagiannis, paediatric cardiologist and director of the paediatric cardiology department of the Onassis Hospital, who took care of Georgina when she was in hospital in Athens, said that all the tests for fitting a defibrillator had been done in 2021.
"Absolutely nothing was found. Everything was normal, excellent heart, excellent cardiogram. After the machine was placed, we monitored the child remotely. With a device that we received from the machine we were getting clues as to whether there was any dangerous activity. We monitored him from June 2021 until the day of death. The device did not show any serious arrhythmia at all," Papagiannis said.
"To answer you on cardiology, the child did not have a surface problem that could cause sudden death. I do not rule out anything else. Cardiac arrest is the final stage after anything serious. If a person lacks oxygen, the heart will stop. She had no heart problem, we had checked it from every angle," he added.
A month ago, in January 2022, Georgina was transferred to Athens for a neurological checkup because of encephalopathy and ended up on the 29th of the month, in the room of the hospital "Aglaia Kyriakou."

So far it cannot be scientifically documented what it is that sent the three little sisters to their deaths, who had different medical histories and ended up in the same way. The family's drama began in March 2019, when 3-year-old Malena was diagnosed with leukemia and a day after her chemotherapy treatment, she passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest. According to the coroners who examined Malena, macroscopically, there was no apparent cause of death. They therefore took a sample of the viscera, as well as biological fluids for laboratory and pathology tests. The pathological anatomical examination revealed severe pulmonary edema and the cause of death was determined to be liver failure.
A year and a half after Malena's death, Irida came to life, who was born in September 2020 and 6 months later passed away suddenly in March 2021. According to the coroner, the 6-month-old infant's death was described as "sudden with undetermined causes" and after the pathological examination conducted, the cause of death was found to be "sinus node agenesis" a rare heart disease.
Why the Public Prosecutor's Office
The Public Prosecutor's Office ordered an urgent preliminary examination to determine the -unanswered so far- causes of the triple tragedy that has shocked the country.
A prosecutor's source made it known that after a detailed reading of the publications, wonderment was expressed about the mystery covering the three "unexpected" deaths of 6-month-old Iris, 3.5-year-old Malena and recently 9-year-old Georgina. "To the common mind it seems incomprehensible not in one case, but in three that struck the same family in the most tragic way that there are insufficient answers," the same prosecution source commented.
Due to the delicacy and seriousness of the matter, the intervention of the Public Prosecutor's Office has received assistance from all levels of prosecutors, since the mysterious deaths have concerned everyone at the judicial, scientific and social levels. Based on the order for the preliminary investigation, the parents of the three girls, the forensic experts who wrote reports on the "mysterious" deaths and the children's doctors are to be called to testify.
