The 50-year-old passenger thought the flight attendants were lying to him and tried to open the aircraft's exit door

Flight American Airlines flight from Los Angeles[/B] bound for Washington was forced to land at Kansas City International Airport, on Sunday afternoon because of "an unruly passenger," the airline said in a statement.

The flight was forced to change destination because of a passenger who initially told flight attendants that someone "was trying to hurt him and followed him onto the plane."

When asked what the individuals looked like, the 50-year-old passenger replied that one was sitting next to him on the plane and another had a knife, which is not the case. A flight attendant took his phone and saw that he tried to call 911.

Shortly after escorting him to his seat, he asked for a glass of water. He then walked to the cockpit area of the plane and told the flight attendants that the plane was not flying and that the flight attendants were lying to him.

He then grabbed some plastic cutlery and a small bottle of champagne, which he tried to break at the neck level of the bottle on a counter.

He began kicking and pushing the flight attendants' trolley towards the crew members, and did not hesitate to attempt to open the exit door of the plane.

"A flight attendant grabbed a coffee pot and hit the man twice in the head," the statement said, with many passengers stepping forward to help the flight attendants.
