PAS welcomes the approval by the Cabinet of Ministers of the National Thalassaemia Strategy
The Pancyprian Anti-Anemic Association welcomes the approval by the Cabinet of Ministers of the "National Strategy for Thalassaemia and other Haemoglobinopathies". This is the most important development in recent years in relation to the treatment of Thalassaemia, it notes.
According to the Association's statement, the adoption of the National Strategy by the State creates the conditions for Cyprus to become, once again, a model in the management of Thalassaemia, in terms of prevention, research and medical monitoring, but also for the way in which the State treats people with Thalassaemia and other haemoglobinopathies.
It notes that the adoption of a National Strategy for Thalassaemia was an urgent need for Cyprus, given the prevalence of the disease among the population, the comparatively large number of people with Thalassaemia and the need to provide quality services to them, as well as the evolving, general reform of the health sector.
The National Strategy for Thalassaemia and other Haemoglobinopathies (NSH), in response to the above need, is the result of the collective effort of the National Thalassaemia Committee (NCC), chaired by Panos Englezos, President of the International Thalassaemia Federation and Honorary President of PAS, which was established by decision of the Council of Ministers on 22/11/2017, with the participation of representatives of the State, the medical and scientific community and patients.
Through scientific workshops and studies, drawing on decades of knowledge, international experience, as well as continuous consultation with all relevant state bodies, the Association also states that the PAS has created a comprehensive strategy for the management of the disease in our country, based on the pillars of population control and prevention, clinical management, social support and welfare, the promotion of research and the upgrading of existing infrastructure to Reference Centres.
With the implementation of the Strategy, in terms of the adoption of guidelines, protocols and procedures, the forthcoming start of work on the New Thalassaemia Centre in Nicosia by the OCYPY, but also the adoption of a complete social care framework, as included in the NSF, along with dozens of other actions and plans, the Pancyprian Anti-Anemia Association looks forward to a better future for the family of people with Thalassaemia in Cyprus.
