The Cyprus problem in one of the most dangerous periods in its history, says the Pancyprian Peace Council

The Pancyprian Peace Council, which met in Nicosia on January 22, in a resolution addressed to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, notes that the Cyprus problem since 2017 is in one of the most dangerous periods in its history as the passive passage of time and the absence of dialogue lead to the creation of new fait accompli and the final partition of Cyprus.

He added that in order to prevent the definitive partition, substantive negotiations must immediately resume from where they left off in Crann Montana, reaffirming the convergences that have been reached and on the basis of the Guterres framework.

The Council reiterates its firm commitment to the search for a solution to the Cyprus problem within the framework of a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality between the two communities, as set out in the relevant UN resolutions on one state with one sovereignty, one nationality and one international personality.

Furthermore, it notes that with the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops and the end of colonization, complete demilitarization, the abolition of British bases and where the human rights and basic freedoms of all the people will be guaranteed.

The Pancyprian Peace Council also demands, as it states, an end to the policies of colonization and genocide that Israel continues to implement against the heroic people of Palestine with the support of the U.S.

It also expresses solidarity with the refugees and calls on the UN to demand that all its member states implement international law with regard to refugees.

It also calls for the lifting of the illegal and inhumane economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba by the US and the dismantling of NATO, whose continued expansionist actions and interventions remain a threat to world peace and security, and opposes the use of Cyprus by the British, NATO and its allies as a military and spy base for the Middle East, as it states .

The Council demands that the UN intensify efforts to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger as well as immediate and effective measures by the UN to eliminate all nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

A Council statement said that its Ordinary Session was held at the Panorama Cinema in Dali, under the motto "Peace and Social Justice in Cyprus and in the World", in the presence of about 100 participants.

At the opening of the conference, the World Peace Council, the World Federation of Democratic Youth, the World Federation of Democratic Women, the World Trade Union Federation and the former president of the WCC, Aris Georgiou, addressed the conference. During the conference, the late Fanis Christodoulou, Costas Gennaris and Haris Kyriakides were honoured for their contribution to the struggles of the WCC.

Peace movements from Cuba, Palestine, Greece, Syria, India, South Africa, Portugal, Serbia, Iran, Britain and Mexico sent greetings to the conference. A highlight of the conference was the speech of the outgoing President of the WCC, Dr. Stelios Sofoklis.

It is noted that the delegates of the conference reviewed the activities of the Movement since the last Congress and set goals until the next one. As stated in the Declaration unanimously approved by the Congress, the WCC, aiming to develop the peaceful, anti-imperialist, anti-war feeling, as well as the feeling of solidarity among the Cypriot people, calls on its members, as well as those who are sensitive to the promotion of peace in Cyprus and the world, to support the effort to upgrade the role of the WCC for a more effective intervention of the movement.

The conference elected a new 80-member General Council. At its first meeting, the new General Council elected a President, Secretary General and the new WCC Secretariat. Tasos Kostas Kostas, a political scientist and historian, was elected as the new President of the WCC and Charis Pasias, Secretary General. The 13-member Secretariat is also composed of Ahmet Deria, Pieris Pieris, Georgia Zenonos, Peter Joseph, Halide Sakalli, Nesieh Yassin, Mario Georgiou, Chrysostomos Moses, George Skouros, Konstantinos Stylianou and Argyro Avgusti-Tittoni.
