The guard of a local mosque said he saw the man burning the Quran inside the mosque on Saturday night. He then told others before informing police. The violent incident occurred in a village in Punjab province, the Associated Press reported.

According to local authorities, police rushed to the scene. There they saw the man surrounded by the angry crowd. Officers tried to protect the man, but the crowd started throwing stones at them and injured them.

Police ordered reinforcements to be sent to the scene, but they did not arrive in time. The mob had stoned the man to death and then hung his body from a tree.

"The unfortunate man was not well and according to his family he often disappeared from the house for days begging and eating whatever he could find," police said."

The guard of the mosque said he saw smoke inside the holy place, and rushed to see what was going on. He found a Quran burning and saw someone trying to burn another. At the time, men were arriving for evening prayers."

The area police chief said they were checking available videos to identify the perpetrators. Police have so far arrested 36 men living in the mosque area. Around 300 people were involved in the stoning.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed dismay over the incident and demanded a report on the police handling of the case, saying they "failed in their duty".

"We have zero tolerance for anyone who takes the law into their own hands and lynching will be dealt with severely," he said in a tweet hours after the incident.

Mob attacks on people accused of blasphemy are common in this conservative Islamic nation. International organizations say blasphemy charges have often been used to intimidate religious minorities and to settle personal scores. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan.
