"Bell tolls" from Home Affairs Commissioner "We should prepare for a much larger number of refugees arriving in the coming days"Over 300,000 Ukrainians have fled to neighbouring EU countries to escape the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Home Affairs Commissioner Ilva Johansson said today.
Addressing an extraordinary meeting of the EU's Council of Interior Ministers in Brussels today on sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine, receiving refugees and managing the EU's external borders, Ilva Johansson said that support would be given by the European Commission and relevant European agencies to EU Member States receiving refugees. "Already these countries are doing a lot," she said, "but we need to prepare for a much larger number of refugees arriving there in the coming days."
Johansson said it is the right time to activate the "temporary protection" status, for Ukrainian refugees to have proper protection, but also the possibility to move to the EU."This is something that will be discussed today and I will listen carefully to the different member states, especially those directly concerned," the Commissioner said.
