France today announced an all-time record of 232 Covid-19 cases.200 new infections, as the country prepares to celebrate the arrival of the New Year in a "quieter way", as several fireworks displays were cancelled and authorities asked citizens to wear masks.

New infections in the last 24 hours have exceeded 200.000 for the third consecutive day, with France one of the epicentres of the pandemic as the wave of cases linked to the Omicron variant sweeps across Europe.

In Paris, the traditional fireworks display for New Year's Eve was cancelled because the city authority said it feared the event would lead to large gatherings of people who would not be able to observe the rules of social seclusion.
