Voting has already begun and will run until March 3
In an effort to attract viewers, the Motion Picture Academy of America has announced that this year's Oscars will announce the results of the audience's vote for their favorite film and favorite cinematic moment.
Voting has already begun, will run until March 3 and in fact three lucky winners selected by lottery will attend next year's ceremony and present an award!
And while the general belief was that Spider-Man's No Way Home would comfortably prevail and this was a way for it to have a significant presence at the awards ceremony, the results so far have a different... opinion.
That's because the first few hours saw a bombardment of votes for Justice League's Snyder Cut, but ineligible, and then the top spot went to an unexpected player: Amazon's Cinderella starring Camila Cabello.
Originally owned by Sony but sold the rights to Amazon, the film easily retains the top spot for now and there is already a buzz in Hollywood about the Academy's move to hold this vote via Twitter.
As a reminder, the public will once again be able to tweet their favorite scene of the year, simply using the hashtag #OscarsCheerMoment. In this case, five lucky winners will win a year's worth of movie theater tickets, subscriptions to streaming services and items from the film museum.
Back in 2019, the Academy was very close to instituting an Oscar for most popular film to encourage younger audiences to attend the ceremony, but the plan was abandoned after backlash from members and critics alike.
The nominations for this year's awards
Two weeks ago, the Oscar nominations were announced for the 94th ceremony, which will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
Power of the Dog, Jane Campion's film, swept with twelve nominations, including best picture, best director, first male lead, two for second male lead and second female lead. Dune follows with ten sub-nominations and will compete for Best Picture, among others.
The Best Picture Oscar will also be contested by Belfast, Coda, Don't Look Up, Drive my Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizz, Nightmare Alley and West Side Story.
It's worth noting that Jane Campion became the first woman to receive two Oscar nominations for directing, having also been nominated in 1994 with The Piano.
Kenneth Branagh, who wrote the screenplay and directed Belfast, made history by becoming the first to receive nominations in seven different categories.
The most surprising absences from the nominations were certainly those of Lady Gaga and Ruth Nega from the race for first female lead, Leonardo DiCaprio for first male lead and Denis Villeneuve from directing.
