Department of Meteorology Weather Bulletin Barometric low affecting the region

Today's weather will be mostly cloudy with localized showers and isolated thunderstorms. Locally, phenomena are likely to be prolonged or intense. Snow or sleet is expected on the higher peaks of the Troodos. A gradual improvement of the weather is expected in the afternoon. Winds will be northeast to southeast, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally in the west and north up to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be rough to choppy. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees inland, around 18 degrees on the coast and around 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight the weather will gradually become mostly clear, although there will be occasional clouds. Winds will be mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and on the offshore up to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will gradually become choppy offshore and up to choppy on the rest of the coast. Temperatures will drop to around 6 degrees inland, around 11 degrees on the coast and around 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.

On Saturday and Sunday, increasing clouds are expected to bring isolated showers. On Monday the weather will be mainly clear.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Saturday, then remain at the same level thereafter, being close to or slightly above average.

The snow depth at Troodos Square, at the time of writing, was 19 cm.

Police warnings for dangerous roads



On the Nicosia - Larnaca motorway, in various places, especially near the Kossiis area, landslides of stones and masses of soil have been observed, as well as accumulation of mud on the road surface.

Closed and dangerous roads in Nicosia and Limassol districts

Severe weather conditions are causing serious problems on the road network, especially in Nicosia district.

Due to the weather conditions the following roads are closed for traffic:

Red Cross Road in Strovolos, due to a tree trunk on the road and accumulation of mud on the road surface
Alexandroupoleos street in Strovolo, due to the overflow of the river
Yannis Koromia street in Kaimakli (Industrial Area of Nicosia) due to overflowing manholes, resulting in flooding of the road.
Stadiou Street in Nissou, Chalepiana road from Dali to Cheri
All bridges within the historic core of Idali
Kotsiati - Agia Varvara road
Potamia road to Agios Sozomenos
Agios Eftychios road in Dali, due to water accumulation
The two bridges in Kokkinotrimithia (Kokkinotrimithia - Paliometochou road and Kokkinotrimithia - Deneia road)
Akaki road to Deneia
On the old road from Limassol to Nicosia, at the downhill of Kakoratzia, due to mud, which has accumulated on the road surface, the road has become dangerous.
In the mountainous areas of Nicosia district, the road Kambos - Orkonda is dangerous due to landslides, while due to the rains the roads Kakopetria - Karvouna, Pedoulas - Prodromos, Prodromos - Platron and Pedoulas - Pine Wood have become very slippery.

In the Limassol district, there are various problems on roads in the mountainous areas, mainly, due to landslides of stones and masses of soil, which make the roads dangerous.

Landslides have occurred on the following roads:

Gerasa road
The road of Gerasa road
Paramytha road
Limassol - Platron road, near the village of Alassa
Saitta Road - Karvouna
Plataniskeia - Agios Thomas Road
Also in the Troodos area there is dense fog, with snow falling from time to time. The road Prodromos - Troodos is closed for all vehicles, while the roads Platrones - Troodos and Karvounas - Troodos are open only for vehicles with four-wheel drive or equipped with anti-slip chains.

In addition to the above, due to the rains in various parts of the road network various problems are likely to occur, which make the roads dangerous. Therefore, drivers are advised to be extremely careful when travelling. They are advised to drive at low speeds at all times, to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead and to keep their headlights on.
