Opposition fires back at Johnson over Downing Street party He did not go to Parliament to answer

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson failed to attend the House of Commons at lunchtime to answer an urgent opposition question on revelations about another Downing Street party on 20 May 2020, amid a lockdown.

In his place appeared the Minister of State without portfolio, Michael Ellis, who instead of answering the question of whether the Prime Minister knew about the party and whether he attended it, as reported by witnesses, said that we should wait for the investigation into similar allegations to be completed.

He noted, however, that the investigation would include the alleged May 20 party. Mr Ellis said that if the investigating officer, Ms Sue Gray, second general secretary of the Cabinet Office, found that criminal charges might arise, she would suspend the investigation and refer the evidence to the Metropolitan Police.

Deputy Labour Party leader Angela Rayner, who tabled the urgent question and secured the debate, slammed Prime Minister Johnson for his absence from Parliament.

"His absence speaks for itself. The public has come to its conclusions. He can run but he can't hide," said Ms Reiner, who also cited messages from citizens who on May 20, 2020 were saying goodbye to loved ones who ended up due to coronavirus.

"There is no need for an inquiry into the simple question: did the Prime Minister attend the May 20, 2020 rally? Did he know about the event beforehand and if so, did he give his approval?" Ms Reiner continued, even questioning whether Boris Johnson is a man "of honour and integrity".

Scottish National Party leader in Westminster Ian Blackford said Boris Johnson "has lost all moral authority and the right thing to do would be to resign", otherwise, he continued, Conservative MPs should force him to quit "and do it now."
