A debate on measures to unclog motorways after road accidents will be opened in the next period in the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament, under the urgent procedure.

The issue was raised two months ago in the Committee by DIKO MP Panicos Leonidou to request information from the Police and the Department of Public Works on the provisions and measures for traffic congestion after exceptional circumstances on motorways.

"To the honour of the Committee, it was decided today to start discussing the matter as an urgent matter in the next period," he said in a statement.

He attributed the phenomenon of traffic accumulation to the lack of policing and the untimely presence of the police in the event of a traffic accident, as well as to the poor design of motorways, which lack adequate escape exits, resulting in an intensification of the problem in the event of traffic congestion.

As Mr Leonidou said, the serious problems that occurred after the severe bad weather in Attiki Odos in Greece and the possibility of the emergence of correspondingly serious problems in the Cypriot road network, due to severe weather phenomena, played a catalytic role in the examination of the issue by the Commission.
