OELMEK calls for the abolition of the Quarterly Examinations "Passive problems" What it says in a statement

OELMEK calls for the abolition of the Quarterly Examinations.

As noted in a statement, the problems that are created are now obvious.

It speaks of shrinking useful teaching time, creating an extremely pressurized school schedule that has a negative impact on students and teachers.

In detail:

"After the completion of the Quarterly Examinations (Q1), which were implemented this year for the first time across the entire range of the High School Cycle, the KDS proceeded to evaluate the institution and came to the following conclusions:

-It is now obvious the problems created by the implementation of the Interim Quarterly Examinations (reduction of useful teaching time, creation of an extremely pressurized school schedule that has a negative impact on school units, teachers and especially students, etc.etc.) and fully documented the fact that practically none of the objectives set from the beginning by the Ministry of Education for the implementation of this institution (e.g. "improvement of learning outcomes", "reduction of paralegidaemia", "reduction of curriculum load", "reduction of stress and pressure for pupils", "increase of personal leisure time for pupils", "boosting the use of new feedback forms of continuous and creative assessment", "making school time a part of pupils' consciousness", "transformation of the school into a community of learning and creation") has not been achieved.

-Considering the above results from this year's full implementation of the Interim Quarterly Examinations, as well as in view of the extension of the institution to the Gymnasium Cycle from the next school year, the KDS of OELMEK reiterates the position for the abolition of the Quarterly Examinations, which we believe do not work for the benefit of the Public School and especially for the students.

-The KDS of OELMEK authorizes the Secretariat of the Organization to prepare a detailed memorandum regarding the evaluation of this institution, which will be sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Education and to all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education.

-Finally, the CECC of the OELMEK authorizes the Secretariat to proceed with informative contacts with all stakeholders, which will start with the meeting with the Pancyprian Confederation of Parents of Secondary Education, which has already been set for Friday, 11 February 2022. At the same time, we call for the immediate initiation of a dialogue to find an effective system of evaluation of students for the benefit of the students themselves and the public school in general."
