Immediately after Tsiodra's visit, the prosecutor's intervention began for the rapid increase of cases in the Asvestochori facility
The great tragedy with the 36 deaths from coronavirus in the nursing home of Asvestochori resulted in a criminal prosecution to the degree of felony by the Prosecutor's Office of Thessaloniki.
According to the newspaper "Macedonia", on August 12, 2020, the first seven cases occurred in this nursing home. The outbreak that occurred was the first after the implementation of the measures banning visits to the nursing home.
The cases turned out to be many more than the first seven, until they reached 36, of which four were employees of the nursing home.
The mobilization was such that even Sotiris Tsiodras and the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, visited the nursing home on the first day the cases were revealed.
Characteristically, Mr. Tsiodras had said at the time that: "We have a major epidemic in this nursing home that was adhering to all measures. No visitors were allowed. Unfortunately, it came from the staff, from contact with a positive case that had been found at a concert in Halkidiki. So it seems from the first samples."
The infectious disease specialist, in fact, suggested that this particular concert was the source of the problem and stressed that everyone should be careful, even the youngest asymptomatic people, as they can transmit the virus with devastating consequences.
Prosecutorial intervention and the first deaths
Immediately after Tsiodra's visit, prosecutorial intervention was launched into the rapid increase in cases at the Asvestochori facility.
The head of the Thessaloniki Prosecutor's Office, Stefanos Zarkantzias, had ordered a preliminary examination to investigate responsibility for the spread of COVID-19.
Subsequently, teams of the National Transparency Authority intervened at the nursing home to look for the source of the problem. There, it was discovered that there were 68 more inmates than the relevant permits provided for. The nursing home housed 186 instead of 88 elderly people.
On August 13, the first two deaths of elderly residents of the nursing home who contracted coronavirus occurred. The two elderly women, in fact, were suffering from underlying diseases.
On August 18, 2020, the deaths of seniors from the nursing home had reached six, and on September 20 of that year they reached 20. But according to the data filed with the prosecutor, the deaths of the elderly recorded from August to December 2020 were 36.
