The new criteria for the disposal and management of T/C properties have been completed and will be put before the relevant Advisory Committee for discussion so that by Easter they can be submitted to the House of Representatives, the Ministry of Interior said in response to the reports of Pafos Mayor Faidon Faidonos on the management of Turkish Cypriot properties.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the criteria were revised on the basis of the policy proposal to modernise the management of T/C properties and aim to ensure transparency, meritocracy and equality.

With regard to the reports of the Mayor of Paphos, the Ministry of Interior replies that they contain unsubstantiated allegations, personal attacks and characterizations against the Minister of Interior and invites him, instead of making unsubstantiated allegations, to submit any evidence he claims to possess to the competent authorities and the Police for verification.

Further in relation to the "insults and personal characterizations against the Minister of Interior", the Ministry of Interior attributes them "obviously" to the failure to meet his demands, adding that everyone is judged by his works and "we leave him to the judgment of the citizens".

Specifically on the references by the Mayor of Paphos to decisions taken by the Advisory Committee, the Ministry of Interior replies that these were taken strictly on the basis of the information provided by the applicants, adding that in cases where the recommendations of the Special Committee were not adopted by the Deputy Director of the T/C Property Management Service, this was done in a documented manner.

It further clarifies that for the three cases of applicants for commercial premises to which the Mayor of Paphos refers and in which the Special Committee recommended by a majority to grant shops, but the recommendations were not adopted by the Deputy Director of the Service, this was because, during their assessment, it was established that they were applicants who were already professionally established, and were therefore at a disadvantage compared to other applicants who had no other income.

In addition, the Ministry of Interior, and in relation to the case of the hairdresser mentioned by Mr. Faidonos, wonders whether for the Mayor of Paphos it would be egalitarian and meritocratic for the Mayor of Paphos to grant the persons he recommends, when they appear with three times as much income as the applicant to whom the premises were granted and who declared his intention to use them.
