The Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen and improve operational cooperation on migration, on the basis of a detailed joint action plan
A Memorandum of Cooperation on migration will be signed today at the Presidential Palace by Interior Minister Nikos Nouris and European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas. The signing ceremony will be attended by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades.
Mr. Schinas, who is on an official visit to Cyprus, said on Saturday that the Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Cyprus, the Commission and all relevant EU departments and agencies, will strengthen and improve operational cooperation on migration on the basis of a detailed joint action plan on migration management.
Last week the Republic of Cyprus and FRONTEX reached an agreement to conclude an operational action plan on migration that will include the development of management and return systems, as announced by Interior Minister Nicos Nouris, following a meeting attended by the Executive Director of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency FRONTEX, Fabrice Leggeri, and officials.
This plan, as Mr. Nouris, includes among other things strengthening the support that FRONTEX provides to the Republic of Cyprus by seconding additional experts in the field of returns and verification of third country nationals.
It also provides for the operation of regular repatriation flights with full cost absorption by FRONTEX and technical support for the upgrading and development of migration management systems in the area of returns.
For his part, Mr. Leggeri referred to the need to increase and strengthen returns from Cyprus and said that this will be done using the agency's resources and mandate to be able to develop the permanent corps of the European Border Guard and Coast Guard to provide expertise and support on the issue of returns.
"Returns are in the focus as this is the most urgent need we have identified, but we can also do more with different activities, such as forged documents, crossing points, etc. CNA
