North Korea confirms two missile launches North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had previously announced that it would seek to strengthen its military capabilities
North Korea announced today that it launched two tactical guided missiles earlier today to verify the accuracy of this weapon system.
The launch, yesterday Monday South Korea claimed two short-range ballistic missiles, was Pyongyang's fourth weapons test since the beginning of the year.
The country's leader Kim Jong Un had previously announced that it would seek to boost its military capabilities despite stiff international sanctions, defying US offers to resume dialogue. Pyongyang has already tested several types of weapons this year, including missiles it claimed were supersonic.
The successive launches come at a particularly delicate time in the region. North Korea's only prestigious international ally, China, is preparing to host the Winter Olympics and South Korea will hold presidential elections in March.
According to North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the two tactical guided missiles fired from the western part of the country accurately hit a target island in the East Sea of Korea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
The Academy of Defense Sciences confirmed the accuracy, safety and effectiveness of the produced weapon system, KCNA added. The launches were initially announced yesterday by South Korea's National Defense General Staff and Japanese authorities. The US demanded that Pyongyang stop its illegal and destabilizing activities.
At the same time, the US special envoy for North Korea's arms program, Sang Kim, called once again Monday, together with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts, North Korea to respond to Washington's offer of dialogue, without preconditions, repeatedly made by President Joe Biden's administration, according to a State Department press release.
