Nobel Peace Prize in wartime Over 340 people and organisations are competing for it this year The list includes Pope Francis, Greta Tunberg and David Attenborough
While the war in Ukraine dominates the international news, the Nobel Institute announced on Tuesday 1 March that 343 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize were received this year.
The number of nominees is down from a record 376 in 2016, and includes 251 individuals and 92 organizations. Their names are not officially announced, but have remained a closely guarded secret for at least 50 years. However, many of those who nominate candidates do not hesitate to reveal the persons or organisations they believe should be honoured.
This year, it is already known that Nobel Peace Prize nominees include democracy campaigners in Myanmar, Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Pope Francis and people fighting to tackle climate change such as Greta Tunberg and David Attenborough.
Nominations are submitted until January 31 each year
It is unknown how much the war in Ukraine will affect the selection of the Nobel Institute's five-member committee, which may also nominate other candidates at its first meeting, which took place on Monday.
A Norwegian MP from the populist right announced Saturday (too late to be included in this year's nominations) that he wants to nominate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the Nobel Peace Prize.
