There is no question of disputing the sovereignty of the Greek islands in the Aegean, the State Department says, in response to recent statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Responding to a question from the Hellas Journal website regarding the Turkish Minister's statement, a State Department spokesperson clarified that "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected. Greece's sovereignty over these islands is not disputed."
It will be recalled that Mevlut Cavusoglu had given an interview to the Turkish network TRT during which he once again raised the issue of the demilitarization of the islands, saying that Turkey has sent a letter to the United Nations on this issue.
However, the Turkish minister went a step further, arguing that the militarization of the islands violates the international treaties that determined their concession and therefore a sovereignty issue can be raised.
