No further measures will be imposed before the New Year in England, the government has confirmed This was preceded by Mr Johnson's briefing on the latest epidemiological data

The British government has decided not to impose further restrictive measures against coronavirus and the Omicron mutation in England before New Year, Prime Minister's spokesman Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have confirmed.

This follows a briefing by Mr. Johnson on the latest epidemiological data from his scientific advisers, particularly on Omicron carrier hospitalisations.

The Downing Street spokesman said the data would continue to be assessed but that no further steps towards restrictive measures would be taken this week.

Shortly afterwards Mr Javid said: "There will be no further measures before the New Year." Asked whether people should go to New Year's Eve parties being held, he said they should do rapid tests beforehand and where possible celebrate in an open space. He generally urged people "to remain cautious."

It should be noted that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have restrictions on indoor gatherings and a number of other restrictions, including the closure of nightclubs.

In England there is only a requirement to wear a mask in most enclosed places, excluding restaurants, an encouragement to telework and a requirement to show a vaccination certificate or a negative rapid test to enter certain crowded places.

Mr Javid did not rule out taking more measures in January, admitting there was still uncertainty about the properties of Omicron, which accounts for "about 90%" of Covid cases in England.
